We all know that GIS is a field that demands understanding of niche technical tools, concepts, and computer software and is an awesome way of conveying spatial information. However, excellence in GIS is impossible without focusing on the human aspects of the job. GIS is certainly about location, but it’s also about connecting and communicating with people. I look forward to sharing the most impactful human interactions of my career and how they helped me both personally and professionally. Drawing from my experiences building an award-winning GIS program at the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), fostering community on the platform formerly known as Twitter, wrestling with imposter syndrome, advocating for GIS portfolios, and more, we’ll look at how human connections are at the heart of GIS. People make the world go round, and the GIS world is no exception!
